Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is a clinically validated light treatment for dry eye disease caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The efficacy of IPL for patients with dry eye due to MGD was first discovered by Dr. Toyos during treatment of facial rosacea, eventually leading to its application in ophthalmology.
IPL technology addresses the root cause of Dry Eye Disease (DED) by reducing inflammation in the ocular area. IPL uses a xenon flash lamp to produce a light output of wavelengths between 400 and 1200 nm. The treatment eliminates abnormal blood vessels and stimulates the meibomian glands to restore normal oil production. This process improves gland function, stabilizes tear distribution and enhances overall eye comfort.
